One of Asia’s most recognisable entrepreneurs, Tony Fernandes is best known for co-founding AirAsia in 2001 with Datuk Kamarudin Meranun and transforming it into a leading low-cost airline group that revolutionised air travel across the region. In a now-legendary move, Fernandes and Datuk Kamarudin acquired the ailing airline for a token MYR1 (approximately USD0.25), along with MYR40 million in debt. Within two years, they returned the business to profitability, and went on to scale it from a Malaysian domestic carrier into one of Asia’s largest and most influential aviation brands. Since 2018, Fernandes has been leading the group’s next phase of growth through a bold digital and business transformation. This includes the launch of AirAsia MOVE in October 2020, a next-generation online travel platform offering flights, hotels, and lifestyle services across the region. He is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Capital A, an investment holding company with a portfolio of synergistic businesses spanning aviation services, digital, and logistics. These include AirAsia MOVE, MRO provider Asia Digital Engineering (ADE), logistics venture Teleport, inflight catering & F&B brand Santan, and brand and IP management company AirAsia Next. He remains the co-founder of and advisor to AirAsia Group.
